Needle and Thread w/ Mark Watson

Today, February 17th, 2021, the track Needle and Thread was released. It’s a sad story about a girl and the voices in her head, put to solo piano music and sound effects for eeriness. For this piece, I had the honour (again) to work with Mark Watson (vocals) and Bas Steemers (production). The vocals of Needle and Thread were recorded in Haverhill (UK), the piano in The Yellow Hippo Studios in The Hague (NL) and it was produced in Studio B. in Houten (NL). The piece is a stand-alone release and not part of an album and it’s available at my Bandcamp page. You can listen to the track for…

    Live streams

On March 19th and 20th this year, Festival Moo-Ah! was supposed to take place in the wonderful Raven Hall in Corby UK. Due to most unfortunate events, the festival has been cancelled, and, as so many who were looking forward, I am gutted. And although I, of course, support the decision taken, I am saddened by the fact. Saddened, because I was looking forward to play and meet up with all the crazy people again.   As feeling sad is not one of my preferred emotions, I have decided to do two live streaming performances on the before mentioned dates. On Friday 19th and Saturday 20th, at 4pm, I will…

    Black Napkins w/ backing track

Black Napkins on Zappadan, 2020 Zappadan takes places every year from December 4th (the day in 1993, on which American Composer Frank Zappa passed away), until December 21st (his day of birth in 1940). “Do something Zappa every day, during Zappadan” … listen to one of his albums, talk about his music, enjoy his legacy … This year, I am trying to record and post a new video each day, in memory of this legacy.  On December 9th, 2020, I played Black Napkins with a drum backing track. Hope you like it.

    About a guitar

I would like to share a story with you all. Knowing myself, it might turn out to be quite a read, so grab some popcorn and a beverage. You can also keep on scrolling, of course. Here goes. About a guitar In 1994 (four years after I movedback to The Netherlands), I went on a trip to / through the United States. I purchased a Greyhound bus pass that allowed me to travel for 60 days throughout the US. I had an open plane ticket as well – to and from New York – (just in case I had to return earlier). I don’t remember if I had an actual…

Watermelon in Easter Hay – solo piano

At the moment, it’s February 10th, I am working on a couple of project at once. One of them is my new solo piano CD entitled Tovarishchi, another one is a single release with working title Chaussettes Vertes (a collaboration with Mark Watson) and another is my setting up online piano lessons. With all this down the funnel, I also have to keep my piano practice up and running. That siad, I have not yet had the time for a new video, so here is a little rerun of a video I did on December 19th, 2018. It’s a solo piano rendition of Frank Zappa’s Watermelon in Easter Hay. Hope…

Mom & Dad – solo piano

On December 20th, 2019 I recorded this video of me playing my arrangement of Mom & Dad. A composition by Frank Zappa. It’s one of my personal favourites. I remember how much I enjoyed making the arrangement. It’s no less than a masterpiece (the composition, I mean, not so much my arrangement). I have fond memories of making this arrangement and I am quite pleased with it. Another version of this arrangement is also featured on my Zappa tribute album The Poodle Magic Pig Type – feat. Mark Watson, from 2018. Thanks for watching 💛 ~ Fred

    Dear Ruth – a letter

Dear Ruth, For the last couple of decades, I have been a great admirer of (the music of) Frank Zappa. Not so much only an admirer, but a follower, a disciple even. Ever since the moment I saw (snippets of) the 1984 New York concert on the BBC, broadcasted in the mere shadow of his passing, my life changed. All I was into at that time. changed. They say there are only several events in ones life, that mark beginnings of change. That make one grow and change paths. For me, that was such a moment. Since that day, I have been a Zappa nut. I didn’t decide to become…
